Supreme Standards 006 \\ Brighton label Mr Bongo ahead of their Love Supreme set

3rd May 2019

For thirty years, Mr Bongo have been the go-to label for quality new releases and reissues, highlighting and printing albums that have been long under-celebrated or difficult to dig out.

Mr Bongo’s roster includes some the finest Brazilian, Latin, reggae, African and Jazz artists out there, including Ebo Taylor, The Skints, Jorge Ben, Arthur Verocai and many more. In fact, since Mr Bongo came to life as a shop on London’s Berwick Street in 1989, they’ve been a gem for Latin music – particularly Brazilian – outside of the Americas.

Since then, Mr Bongo has had three homes in London and one in Shibuya, Japan. Now, based solely in Brighton, they’re a must-visit for any serious South-Coast digger.

Mr Bongo will be putting on a killer DJ set at Love Supreme Jazz Festival this Summer, playing the Blue In Green stage on Friday night. To celebrate, we took some time with Mr Bongo’s Graham Luckhurst to get a sneak-peak at the records they’re releasing in 2019. To accompany, they’ve also gifted Supreme Standards with a guest mix, tantalising us for their Friday night set – track list below.

\\ How do Mr Bongo decide which tracks and albums to reissue?

They are generally records we cant get hold of ourselves or are sometimes records within our own collections that we think need to be made available. Some take a few months to license, others take ten years or more! We are always open to suggestions too.

\\ Tell us about some of your current releases that you’re excited about?

We’re all very excited about a record called ‘Mantra Moderne’ by Kit Sebastian; we’ve included ‘Durma’ here in this mix which no one will have heard previously. We received the completed album as a random email demo at the end of 2018 and it absolutely blew us away – it’s a true contemporary masterpiece and people are going to flip when they hear it. Kit and Merv are genuine, true, artistic talents, the likes of whom you do not find easily. It drops on 19 July on all formats – singles from now until launch – and the live show debuts 20 July at Rough Trade East in London as part of the Mr Bongo ’30 Years’ takeover that day. WATCH OUT.

We’re also excited about the other new full-length albums we are releasing – The Skints in May, Jungle Brown in September, followed by the return of the mighty, Bedouin Soundclash. We are very proud to have signed all of these artists.

In terms of reissues and compilations, Mr Bongo Record Club Volume Three is the biggy this summer. Out at the end of May, 20 tracks that we play on the radio, in clubs, from our own collections; across jazz, soul, Brazil, Africa, Japan, USA and more. That will be accompanied by LPs from Azimuth, Gyedu-Blay Amoblley, Minoru Muraoka, Novos Bahianos and more. Brazil 45’s will return with a bang too…

On Bank Holiday Sunday 5 May we celebrate our 30th birthday – 1989-2019 – at Brighton Dome with The Skints, Hollie Cook, Moses Boyd Exodus, Jungle Brown, Mr Thing, DJ Format and Huw72. Going to be HUGE. Tickets on sale now for that, please come.
