Jazz Diary \\ Great things happening in February

5th February 2019

Each month, we select some of the best releases as well as events happening in London and further afield. Here’s our pick of great things to do in February.

Birdland Kissa with Delia Teșileanu

7 February

Host of ‘Counterpoint’ on Soho Radio, Delia heads to Birdland Kissa at Near & Far, a pop-up that pays tribute to the Japanese culture of actually listening to records in public social spaces. Delia – the self-proclaimed ‘big-haired music head and miniature-sized’ broadcaster and label mate (Wah Wah 45s, First Word Records) – will be playing obscure and under-appreciated finds. Free entry.

Gaijin Blues hold a free lunch party in London

8 February

Celebrating the release of their self-titled debut EP, the Polish Japanophiles play live at Love Vinyl record store, with DJ support from Tom Central and BodyMoves. Listen to the premiere of ‘Cafe LeBlanc’, which was premiered on Supreme Standards

SEED Ensemble release their debut album ‘Driftglass’

8 February

Lead by Nérija saxophonist and composer Cassie Kinoshi, SEED Ensemble are presenting some of the most technically advanced compositions on the London scene. Check out the debut album ‘Driftglass’, released on Jazz re:freshed.

Yusufla launch their debut EP at Pizza Express Jazz Club

11 February

The London band, fronted by saxes and lead by Rachel Jackson, launch their first EP at Pizza Express Jazz Club. Check out the mesmeric video for ‘Knotweed’, premiered on Supreme Standards.

Joe Armon-Jones plays London and Brighton

12 / 22 February

The Ezra Collective pianist took flight in 2017, taking part in the CHICAGOxLONDON mixtape before revealing his debut EP ‘Starting Today’. Since then he’s become one of the most celebrated keys players in the UK.

Tru Thoughts team up with Supreme Standards at Ghost Notes

14 February

Brighton label Tru Thoughts have two hotly-anticipated albums on the way from Ego Ella May and Bryony Jarman-Pinto. At Ghost Notes in Peckham, you’ll hear the very first previews, accented by a set from the label’s head honcho, Robert Luis. Get tickets

Theon Cross drops some heat on Gearbox Records

15 February

It’s the first we’ve heard from Theon Cross on a solo level since his ‘Aspirations EP’ in 2016. Following a world tour with Sons of Kemet and his appearances of sideman for well-known names including Kano, ‘Fyah’ is a new statement that sounds big; this record proves again that no one handles a tuba quite like Theon.

Ruby Rushton release a two track 7 inch single

22 February

A side ‘Eleven Grapes’ opens with a fanfare lead by Tenderlonious on flute and Nick Walters on trumpet. Completed with ‘One Mo’ Dram’ on the other side of the single, the 7 inch is strictly release, with 500 copies pressed. Go get.
