Brownswood announce ‘Sunny Side Up’ – the Australian answer to ‘We Out Here’

11th June 2019
Brownswood Recordings have announced ‘Sunny Side Up’, Melbourne’s answer to 2018 London compilation, ‘We Out Here’.

The nine track album features forward-thinking artists from Melbourne’s DIY scene, which has been gaining international attention over the last few years.

Without roots in the early days of Jazz, Australia’s underground music scenes have been liberated by its exploration and inspiration from varied sources. For Melbourne, many of the musicians in the city’s DIY scenes execute their creativity with a Jazz and soul state of mind. Moments of samba, cha-cha, p-funk and broken beat roam throughout ‘Sunny Side Up’, whipping up a delicious taster of what the city has been cooking up.

Much like ‘We Out Here’ – the time-capsule compilation that pulled together many of the artists who were progressing the London Jazz scene at the time – ‘Sunny Side Up’ presents musicians who are shaping Melbourne’s moorish movement. Silentjay takes on the title of Musical Director for this record, which was recorded over the course of a week at The Grove, a house-cum-studio in the North Melbourne suburb of Coburg.

‘Sunny Side Up’ sees meditative chants and head nods from Kuzich, a spiritual jazz take from Gondwana-signed Allysha Joy and an exhilaratingly wonky Jazz-ish ballad from Aundrey Powne

The first tune to be dropped from the album is from Dufresne. Fresh from arranging the horns for Sampa the Great’s live shows, the multi-instrumentalist member of the Mandarin Dreams collective reveals the funk-heavy ‘Pick Up / Galaxy’. Tickled with wah-wah and woody percussion, the track evolves into its second half with feel good lyrics and horns.
